Description: The Centro is pleased to announce a new summer program at the Piccola Universita Italiana in Tropea (Calabria), Italy. The Piccola is an officially recognized language school by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. Tropea in Calabria, in the 'boot' of Italy, has been described as the 'Pearl of Calabria' The Piccola offers a rich variety of cultural activities, excursions, and all levels of Italian language study- for Audit or College Credit. Highlights: In 1993 the Centre was founded as "Caffe Culturale". In 2004 the name was changed to "Piccola Universita Italiana" it has been recognized with presa d'atto prot 23860/P from 30.11.04 by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. The Centre is located in the heart of Tropea in a beautiful house typical of the area. Lessons are held in classrooms or else out on the terrace. The Italian Language and Culture Centre in Tropea, not far from Capo Vaticano, is staffed by language teachers who are all native speakers and university graduates with years of experience behind them. Our staff are experts in teaching their own languages to students, business people, and lovers of the Italian language and culture from overseas.
Director - Piccola, Italy 2010  Dr. Alberto Ferreiro, was born in Mexico City and is a native speaker of Spanish. He was honored in 1983-84 with a Fulbright Fellowship to work on his doctoral dissertation in Barcelona-Madrid, Spain. He earned his B.A. and M.A. at the University of Texas-Arlington and a Ph.D. in medieval history at the University of California-Santa Barbara. He has published 7 books, over 65 scholarly articles mainly on medieval ecclesiastical Iberian history and is a frequent participant in international conferences. For 20 years he has been taking students to the University of Salamanca and has organized and led several two week Carmelite Spirituality Pilgrimages in Spain for adult learners. He is a tenured professor of European History at Seattle Pacific University where he has taught since 1986. He is also a summer Visiting Professor/Lecturer at the University of Salamanca and Founder-Director of the Centro Fray Luis de León.

Cost Include Description: (USD 3,500.00 includes)
- Centro-Piccola Tuition and books for all classes.
- Piccola lodging in fully furnished apartments (double), for single there is an additional fee
- Italian Classes, 4 hours daily (total of 60 hours for 3 weeks and 40 hours for 2 weeks)
- 6-10 Quarter Credits, 6 in Italian (11 levels offered). You may take the classes for Audit or Letter Grade.
- Excursions to Pompeii, Messina-Taormina, Reggio Calabria Museum, Castles and Churches, and Locri. Transport and museum fees included (no meals).
- Rome excursion includes double occupancy with breakfast, museum fees, and city transport led by Dr. Ferreiro.

Not Included in the Base Price:
- Airfare is not included in the price
- The fee does not include a food allowance. Based upon a 50 Euro a day budget eating out it can be as high as USD 800.00. Students, however, who cook their own meals as most do in the fully furnished kitchens will cut the cost based on experience to about USD 400.00 for the three weeks there. Eating out is always more expensive than cooking at home.

Centro Fray Luis de Leon at the University of Salamanca's Mission Statement:
The Centro Fray Luis de Leon offers two programs at the University of Salamanca in Spain and the Piccola Universita Italiana, Tropea, Italy primarily in the summer, but semester or year long opportunities are available.
